Map and Measure Trees in March with the NASA GLOBE Observer App
LOCATION
Where ever you are!
TIME
PUBLIC EVENT:
Yes
DESCRIPTION
An Taisce is looking for citizen-scientists to measure Tree Height from March 3rd through 28th using the GLOBE Observer App.
How? Once you have downloaded the GLOBE Observer app and created an account, the Trees tool will guide you through the observation process. Required steps include selecting a tree and using your device to measure the angle from the bottom to the top of the tree, walking to the tree and counting your steps (to determine the distance) and reporting on surface conditions. The app will use that information to calculate an estimate of the tree’s height.
Why? It’s fun and importantly, trees cool and moisten our air and fill it with oxygen and can help balance our carbon budget. Tree height is the most widely used indicator of an ecosystem’s ability to grow trees. Observing tree height allows NASA scientists to understand the gain or loss of biomass which can inform calculations of the carbon that trees and forests either take in from or release into the atmosphere.

DESCRIPTION
We are delighted to invite you to the Irish Tree Explorers Network (ITEN) free end-of-project symposium which will be held on March 19th.
The theme of the symposium is: ‘From Root to Branch: Rethinking Our Relationship with Trees’. It is widely recognised that trees are critical for the survival and development of humanity, not only through their role in the provision of clean air, food, shelter, medicine, wellbeing and climate resilience, but also in the way they influence cultural heritage and identity. Despite these many benefits, tree extinction is accelerating at an alarming rate, with far-reaching consequences for biodiversity and ecosystem stability.
This symposium will feature papers from key speakers who will help us to rethink our relationship with trees from multiple perspectives.

Society of Irish Foresters
While we have lost almost all of our native woodlands, we continue to have a record of their existence through our placenames.
Did you know that in Ireland we currently have 328 baronies, 2,509 civil parishes and 61,119 townlands? It is estimated that 13,000 townlands or 20% are named after trees, groves of trees and the uses of trees. Since trees are highly visible in the landscape, it is not surprising that so many of our placenames have derived from trees and woods.
Today, if a forest were to spring up everywhere there would be a tree associated name in a townland, and the country would once more be clothed with an almost uninterrupted succession of forests. Prior to road signs, with which we are so familiar today, natural, and manmade features were the only directional sources.
All are welcome.
This event is worth 15 CPD points to those registered on the Society of Irish Foresters’ CPD Programme.

Replanting ancient trees lost to development

DESCRIPTION
Our neighbouring estate had on it, until most recently, a unique collection of ancient and giant trees of over 170 years old. Trees of large volume and height that provided oxygen, carbon capture, shelter and refuge for wildlife from Georgian times until half a year ago today. At least 8 protected species of wildlife have now been displaced and endangered further with this felling. These trees were considered to be trees of high value and quality in an Arboreal Report produced, citing guidelines contained within BS5837 (2012). They were a source of food and nurture of the local natural ecology and a treescape of essential amenity value for residents and passers by in Killiney and Dalkey. Even yew and hawthorn trees were felled without any due regard. Regardless of this knowledge and important consideration, DLR CoCo decided to approve the felling of all of these trees, including the giant trees with top 3 age and size for the entirety of Ireland. Our tree planting event and action is an attempt to replant trees to start to offset some of what has been lost. We will have to plant these new trees on our side of the fence as our neighbour is now creating car parking spaces where once stood magnificent trees. Our tree planting event will seek to create new shelter to wildlife, nurture for our local ecology, oxygen for our lungs, carbon capture for our future and essential amenity for all.
Currently, tree protection is considered to be a hindrance to the expansion of housing and commercial building projects. Tree protection is currently an afterthought and is not a real world reality in DLR CoCo. or in most planning departments of most councils across Ireland. New buildings get preference over existing or new trees, resulting in the amount of trees diminishing by the decade. Ireland has sadly gone from being an actual rainforest to what is now called a Green Desert by ecologists. The natural ecosystem in Ireland is completely gone and the results are apparent in nature the country over. Woodlands are now a niche, few and far between, a rarity. The woodlands, coppices and individual trees we have left standing must be protected with tooth and nail and expanded with new planting of new coppices and woodlands to prevent complete concrete takeover and destruction of liveable habitat for all residents and all life in Ireland. With regards to Tree Protection Orders, there is currently no clarity, no accessibility to clear information pertaining to TPOs. Nowhere, considerations and parameters are laid out and there is no form available to the public for application. Communication with DLR Parks to obtain information on TPOs and how to apply for them is incredibly unclear, difficult and time consuming. This has resulted in practically no TPOs being in force on trees in the whole of DLR CoCo as of today. Currently, the enforcement of tree protection is considered to be a joke, to be ignored without consequences, by developers and tree service contractors. In the very rare occasion a fine is issued for the illegal cutting of trees or the ignorance of the laws relating to trees, these fines are minimal and completely absorbable as a cost to developers and contractors alike – a small price to pay for the removal of an inconvenience to their plans and activities. Currently, any individual or group of residents seeking to stop an individual, a company or a contractor working for a developer from cutting down trees, is completely powerless to act and request assistance from the Council and its enforcement bodies – including the Gardai. Tree protection is currently apparently meaningless as it is not enforced. The Gardai do not answer to calls regarding ongoing illegal tree cutting. They refer any reports on illegal tree felling in progress to the Council. The Council refers to Enforcement and to An Bord Pleanala. The Bord refers back to the Council. Filing a report of illegal tree cutting results in being led around the garden path of denial of responsibility. When a builder decides to start cutting down trees before a building proposal has been approved, the Council states it cannot act due to how the law works. Ultimately, the parties felling trees illegally can do so without being stopped. Ignorance is no excuse for disregarding, disrespectful, unlawful behaviour, but education can go a long way towards realisation that what tree preservation activists are saying may not just be irritating nonsense and a hindrance to higher profits - but have actual practical, ethical and otherwise meaningful merit. Such education should include tree maintenance and care and wildlife protection.

Le ceiliúradh a dhéanamh ar Sheachtain na Gaeilge agus Sheachtain na gCrann ag tarlú ag an am céanna, tá áthas orainn an turas Gaeilge seo a chur i láthair, chun go leor de na speicis chrainn dhúchais in Éirinn a chur in aithne duit. Tá an Ghaeilge spreagtha go mór ag an dúlra agus ag an tírdhreach, mar sin bígí linn agus an caidreamh saibhir seo á shaothrú agus ár gCrainn Dhúchasacha a cheiliúradh i nGarraithe Náisiúnta Lus na hÉireann.
Our Native Trees
To celebrate both Seachtain na Gaeilge and Tree Week running concurrently, we gladly present this Irish Language tour to introduce you to many of Ireland's native tree species. DESCRIPTION
Highlight Event for National Tree Week.
For the past five years, our group has worked with the Easy Treesie climate action initiative which aims to plant a million trees for a million school children in Ireland. In 2021, we introduced the Reforestation for West Wicklow project, which encourages land owners in the West Wicklow area to set aside a plot of land to reforest for the future as a positive climate action.
We are thrilled that this initiative has helped 35,000 native tree saplings to have been planted across West Wicklow over the years.
While there is no one-off event for this project, we would love to raise awareness for it over National Tree Week and encourage more native tree planting initiatives around Ireland.

Reconnect with Nature Through Forest Bathing
What is Forest Bathing?
Forest Bathing, or Shinrin-yoku, is a mindful, sensory experience that invites you to slow down and fully absorb the healing atmosphere of the forest. Originating in Japan, this scientifically proven practice offers numerous health benefits, including reduced cortisol levels, a strengthened immune system, and improved mood and mental well-being.
What to Expect:
This guided walk lasts approximately 2.5 to 3 hours and is designed to enhance relaxation, rejuvenation, and overall well-being. It involves gentle, meditative walking and nature-connection activities, allowing you to deepen your awareness and presence in the forest.
The experience concludes with an herbal tea ceremony, which amplifies the forest’s calming effects on the nervous system and leaves you feeling refreshed and restored.
Slow down, breathe deeply, and rediscover the tranquillity of nature.
